OUR STORY

CLARA

Clara House and Garden began out of a love for cultivating a space that was timeless and classic, well-appointed yet functional. Historical period pieces and design have always been what draws my eye. I was raised by parents who vacationed at historical places and my childhood home was full of antiques and boxwood gardens. As I was dabbling in landscape design projects and dressing commercial spaces in timeless English Estate style, I was simultaneously on a journey of digging into my ancestral family history.

A portion of my family history we already knew, but it became more clear to me where I innately inherit my love for a time gone by in history, for estate antiques and style both indoors and out. I named Clara House after my 10x Great Grandmother, Lady Clara Colclough Sneyd (Smith) who was born at Tintern Abbey to her Father (Knight) Sir Anthony Colclough and her mother Lady Clare Agard Colclough. Lady Clara married William Sneyd whose family was of the Sneyds of Keele (Keele Pictured Above) before their lineage came to America a couple of generations later. Generational Family Estates throughout England and Ireland, Writings, Paintings, Family Crests, Portraits, Gardens, The Abbey and even the renowned author, Jane Austen writing about some of my family members in her letters were discovered, connecting the dots of where I may inherit my natural interests.

I wanted to connect my designs to my family, to where I come from and to whom I come from. A love of history and timeless classics are what creates established spaces - spaces that have a story, that have a traditional allure. Any designer, whether interior or exterior landscape designer, can create a new space but without estate pieces such as found antiques or weathered patina planters the design will be short of the established classic feel. While I am capable of a all new renovation, I certainly do love a project that requires something old. My personal collection of old finds, antiques, weathered terracotta planters mixed with new outdoor furniture or indoor linens will create an elevated look for your space. Clara House and Garden is a culmination of design and furnishings with a nod towards my family heritage as a descendant of Lady Clara Colclough Sneyd (Smith).
